
In case you haven’t heard, they are going all out on the safety protocols for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, January 20th.
To put things in perspective:
- The Secret Service will be using over 30 miles worth of fencing. the most ever used for an inauguration ceremony.
- The total law enforcement presence will include the entirety of the MPD police force, over 4,000 additional police officers from around the country, and the National Guard.
- Multiple security checkpoints throughout the District, particularly along the mall to screen attendees.
- Drones will be utilized for additional security.

Metro closures for the Presidential Inauguration
On January 20th the Metro and the Bus will be operating on a unique schedule, including multiple station closures, several detours, and restricted access to specific entrances for specific stations.
The following metro stations will be closed from Sunday, January 19th at 8:00 pm to Tuesday, January 21st at 5 am:

- Mt Vernon Sq.

- Smithsonian
The following metro station will be closed on inauguration day (January 20th) only:

The following metro station entrances will also be closed:
- Entrances at Metro Center (13 & G St NW; 12 & F St NW) and Farragut West (17 & I St NW)
- Entrance at Gallery Pl-Chinatown (7th & F St NW) – closed only January 19th from 2 am to 10 pm
- Judiciary Square F Street/National Building Museum entrance closes at 4 pm on January 19th and will reopen at 5 am on the 20th.
- Other stations throughout the District will have specific entrances labeled ‘Entry Only’ or ‘Exit Only’ for crowd control.
Additional tips for public transit travel on Inauguration Day
- Bicycles and large coolers/containers will not be permitted aboard Metro trains on Inauguration Day.
- Prohibited items at Inauguration events include but are not limited to: weapons, firearms, explosives, laser pointers, (glass, thermal, or metal) containers, selfie sticks, drones, large backpacks, and signs.
- Minimize any need for line transfers if you plan to take the Metro on Inauguration Day to get toward the National Mall, each Metro Line has a station within walkable distance which will be faster than attempting to transfer trains.
- Purchase a SmarTrip card in advance to avoid crowded queues or ensure your card is loaded with enough trips to last the day.
- Road closures will also apply to the Metro Bus, meaning that most routes inside the city will be closed.
