The vibrant traditions of Día de los Muertos are returning to Southwest DC this weekend.
On Sunday, November 1, The Wharf will transform into a colorful tribute to the Mexican holiday, offering an afternoon dedicated to honoring loved ones and celebrating with the local community.
This completely free event invites visitors to dress up in colorful clothing, floral crowns, or skull-inspired accessories. From energetic cultural dances to a poignant evening light procession, the waterfront will be packed with ways to participate in the festivities.
Live mariachi and folklórico dancing
The celebration features a packed schedule of live performances highlighting traditional and contemporary Latin music. Crowds can enjoy music from local favorites like La Unica, Sol y Rumba, and Mariachi Imperio by Blanca Chucuan.
Alongside the musical acts, attendees will be treated to captivating cultural dance showcases. The lineup includes moving performances by local groups such as Ballet Folklorico El Tepeyac, bringing traditional Mexican choreography to the waterfront.
Family activities and sugar skull decorating
Families looking to get hands-on can head over to Recreation Pier, which will serve as a hub for children’s activities. Kids can get their faces painted to match the vibrant aesthetic of the holiday or try their hand at decorating traditional sugar skulls.
The pier will also feature a life-sized sugar skull sign, providing a perfect photo op to remember the afternoon. Additionally, adult attendees can try their luck at the D.C. Lottery prize wheel set up on-site.

Decorated altars and the evening light procession
A central element of any Day of the Dead event is the ofrenda. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the beautifully decorated altars set up along the waterfront, which serve as a dedicated space to honor and remember loved ones who have passed.
As the afternoon winds down, the celebration culminates in a community light procession along the water. To help guide the way, LED candles will be distributed to guests at M Street Landing before the glowing walk begins.
