Washington, D.C. just earned one of its biggest culinary wins of 2026.
Albi, the Navy Yard restaurant led by chef Michael Rafidi, has been named the top-ranked restaurant in the Northeastern United States in the newly released North America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026 ranking.
Albi landed at No. 6 overall in North America, making it not only the highest-ranked restaurant in D.C., but also the highest-ranked restaurant anywhere on the East Coast on this year’s list.
The annual ranking, produced by 50 Best, is voted on by hundreds of anonymous restaurant industry experts and has quickly become one of the continent’s most closely watched food awards.
For Washington’s dining scene, Albi’s rise signals something bigger: D.C. is no longer just competing nationally — it’s increasingly becoming one of North America’s defining food destinations.
How Albi became the top-ranked restaurant on the East Coast
Albi’s placement at No. 6 in North America represents one of the standout results in this year’s ranking and positions the restaurant ahead of celebrated dining cities along the East Coast.
The recognition comes just one year after Albi appeared further down the list, marking a major leap in visibility and prestige.
Opened in 2020, Albi has built a national reputation around modern Palestinian cooking centered on a live-fire wood-burning hearth.
Nearly every dish is touched by flame, creating a menu that chef-owner Michael Rafidi has described as deeply personal and rooted in family traditions connected to Ramallah.
The restaurant’s name translates to “my heart” in Arabic — a reflection of Rafidi’s approach to food as storytelling, memory, and hospitality.
Before opening Albi, the Maryland-born chef reportedly spent more than a year researching family recipes and refining the concept through pop-ups.
That blend of identity, technique, and destination-worthy dining appears to have resonated with voters in a major way this year.
D.C.’s other restaurants that made North America’s top 50
Albi wasn’t Washington’s only standout.
Three additional D.C. restaurants secured places on the North America 50 Best Restaurants 2026 ranking, giving the District four total entries — one of the strongest showings of any US food destination this year.
The other D.C. restaurants recognized were:
- Moon Rabbit — No. 24
- Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi — No. 37
- Pascual — No. 42 (new entry)
Together, the results highlight how broad Washington’s dining identity has become — from Palestinian cuisine and contemporary Vietnamese influences to ambitious tasting menus and new concepts gaining national attention.
With Albi leading the way as the East Coast’s highest-ranked restaurant, D.C.’s position on the continental food map just became a lot harder to ignore.
