A suburb just outside Washington, D.C. is once again being recognized as one of the very best places to live in America.
In U.S. News & World Report’s newly released 2026 rankings for the Best Places To Live for Quality of Life, Bethesda, Maryland, ranked #4 in the entire country.
That’s a slight shift from last year, when Bethesda held the #3 spot in the publication’s 2025 rankings. Still, the affluent Montgomery County suburb remained one of the highest-ranked communities in the nation for overall livability.
The annual rankings evaluate factors like healthcare access, education, commute times, air quality, safety, and overall resident well-being.
Why Bethesda ranked among the best places to live in America again
According to U.S. News & World Report, Bethesda continues to stand out for its strong job market, highly rated schools, healthcare access, and overall quality of life.
The suburb is home to major institutions, including the National Institutes of Health and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, helping it earn the publication’s top-ranked job market score nationally.
Bethesda is also known for its walkable downtown, Metro access into Washington, D.C., upscale dining scene, and abundance of parks and trails.
Despite its exceptionally high housing costs, the area continues attracting residents thanks to its combination of suburban comfort and direct access to the nation’s capital.

How the 2026 quality of life rankings were determined
The 2026-2027 U.S. News rankings analyzed hundreds of communities across the country using data tied to quality of life, affordability, desirability, and job market strength.
This year’s methodology placed additional emphasis on affordability as rising living costs continue to shape where Americans want to move.
U.S. News said the rankings incorporate data from multiple federal agencies and public surveys measuring what Americans value most in a place to live.
While Bethesda fell one spot compared to last year’s ranking (#3), its continued presence near the very top of the list reinforces the Washington, D.C. region’s reputation as one of the country’s most desirable places to live.
