The Washington Commanders have finished the 2024-25 NFL season as the runners-up in the NFC behind the Philadelphia Eagles after losing 55-23 in the NFC Championship on Sunday afternoon.
While the Commanders’ season ended in unfortunate fashion, this year’s success far exceeded the expectations that seemingly everyone had for them just six months ago, before the season started.
Commanders’ playoff push stops short in Philly
The Washington Commanders’ historic 2024-25 season ended after they fell short against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
They had some success to start the game, including a 30+ yard touchdown reception by Terry McLaurin and a 23-yard fake punt play that helped our Commies secure a crucial first down, but unfortunately ended the half 27-15.
In the second half, despite a few impressive plays by the Commanders, they could not overcome the deficit and fell to the Eagles 55-23.

Why did the Commanders lose to the Eagles?
- The offensive turnovers
Unfortunately, four turnovers on the offensive side throughout the game came at a big cost for Washington, after not having a single turnover so far this postseason.
- The defense struggled to contain the run
On the other side of the ball, the Commanders’ defense struggled to contain the Eagles’ running game – the Eagles scored seven rushing touchdowns amassing over 150 rushing yards.
- Costly penalties in key situations
The Commanders had more penalties today than in any game this postseason and sadly a handful of those penalties came at crucial moments.
In the end, the Commanders had 9 penalties which amounted to 47 yards.

The future is bright for the Cardiac Commanders
The Washington Commanders, after making their deepest playoff push in over 30 years, are only one year into a major rebuild operation for the franchise.
To put things into perspective, this is how much changed between this year’s Commanders and the same team from last year:
- First season with a new owner after the team was sold in 2023
- New GM in Adam Peters
- New Coach in Dan Quinn
- Rookie Quarterback, Jayden Daniels
- Led league in off-season free agency signings (26)
- The lowest amount of returning players from the 2023 season of any team in the NFL
What can Commanders fans expect next year?
While postseason success is never a given in the NFL, given the success that the Commanders have had this year – it’s fair to expect next season to be even better!
Jayden Daniels is one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL and considering that the Commanders are now an attractive destination for free agents looking for a new team, there’s a good chance our roster gets even better!
