Copenhagen Has Unveiled Plans For These Amazing Floating Parks — And We Want Them Too

Copenhagen is getting a set of amazing floating parks.

Slowly but surely, our parks are coming back to life. Between the sunny weather and lockdown rules easing, we can start to make the most of our surrounding green spaces again.

But, in Copenhagen, it seems this is going a step further, with their park game about to go through the roof. Floating parks… yes, floating parks could be on their way to the Danish capital—and we need a slice of what they’re getting.

The “parkipelago” is proposed to be in the city centre, and will be made up of man-made islands resembling parks. Their intended use covers everything from swimming and sunbathing to boating and farming. Festivals and events could even take place on the floating parks once social-distancing measures are relaxed.

Floating parks designers Marshall Blecher and Studio Fokstrot claim the islands will create “swim zones, floating saunas, floating gardens, floating mussel farms and a floating sail-in café, all free to be explored by the increasing number of kayaks, sailors, GoBoaters, tourists and fishermen in the harbour.”

A need for more public space, as well as green space and wildlife, emboldened the desire for this project to go ahead. Even the underside of the islands will be a perfect environment for seaweed and mollusks. They have also been designed with environmental challenges and rising sea levels in mind.

There is already one island in place: the CPH-Ø1. This is a simple wooden platform with a tree. Three more are set to accompany it this year.

We don’t care where, or when, but get these to Chicago! A picnic on a floating park is what post-lockdown life is crying out for.
