The D.C. dating scene has produced its fair share of ‘true love’ sceptics over the years, and if you asked seasoned Washingtonians, they’d probably tell you it was one of the worst in the country.
Unfortunately for anyone who’s been beaten or battered by the D.C. dating scene, a new study has just come out saying that the District ranks as one of the top-10 best dating cities in the nation, outperforming the very cities that Hollywood seems to insist are more romantic.
Where does Washington, D.C. rank among the best dating cities in America?
According to the study, the District managed to rank as the #7 best dating city in the United States, an 11-spot jump from where the District was ranked last year at #18!
Based on the study’s metrics, here’s how Washington, D.C.’s dating scene broke down:
- Overall rank – #7
- Total Score (Out of 100) – 62.46
- Dating Opportunities Rank – #14
- Cost of Living Rank – #34
- Quality of Life Rank – #17
- Dating Interest Rank – #8
Despite what you might think about the dating pool around the nation’s capital, the data, which was sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau, NeighborhoodScout, NYU Langone Health, and Google Trends, found that the Washingtonians were actually particularly interested in dating, and there’s apparently no shortage of fish in the sea as far as ‘dating opportunities’.

What other cities ranked among the best dating cities in the nation?
The following cities rounded out the ranking’s top-10 best dating cities in America:
- Rochester, NY
- Pittsburgh, PA
- Boston, MA
- Minneapolis, MN
- Cleveland, OH
- Atlanta, GA
- Washington, D.C.
- Chicago, IL
- St. Louis, MO
- Buffalo, NY

What was the study’s methodology?
If you’re questioning how this study formed its ranking, we don’t blame you for being skeptical…
Here were the weighted metrics that were used to establish the ranking:
- Dating Opportunities (40 points) – Singles per 1,000 residents, men-to-women ratio, and age distribution.
-
Cost of Living (25 points) – Median rent and income for a one-person household.
-
Quality of Life (25 points) – Walkability, restaurants and bars, plus museums and theaters (because great dates need great settings).
-
Dating Interest (10 points) – Google search interest for Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, and Grindr.
