Washington DC might scream politics, but trust us, there’s way more to this city than suits and speeches. We’re talking offbeat adventures, hidden gems, and enough deliciousness to fill your Insta feed for months. So ditch the known museums and monuments and fill your D.C. bucket list with these super cool experiences.
1. Kayak the Potomac River
If there’s something D.C. natives are known for, it’s their love for paddle sports, especially now that the warm weather is creeping in. So, grab your kayak or paddleboard and head to the Potomac River for a fantastic day out. Paddle past monuments like the Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin and enjoy a fresh perspective of the city. It’s basically a sightseeing cruise, but way more active (and tbh, way cooler).
2. Hang out with tiny trees at The National Bonsai Foundation
Ever hung out with a bunch of tiny trees? You can at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum! These aren’t your average houseplants – some of these miniature masterpieces are hundreds of years old. The best part? This free botanic garden is located on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum. They even offer educational events all year round with special Bonsai courses that teach you the basics of the art of growing these tiny but mighty trees. So come learn, be amazed, and maybe even get inspired to cultivate your own mini-forest at home.
3. Experience a Candlelight concert at an iconic D.C. venue
Imagine the soaring melodies of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons echoing through the grandeur of St. Agnes Parish or Queen’s anthems blasting through the Miracle Theatre while bathed in the warm glow of flickering candles. Candlelight concerts offer an intimate and unforgettable way to experience classical music in some of D.C.’s iconic city venues. Ready to experience music in a new light?
4. Have an Ethiopian coffee ceremony at Sidamo
If you haven’t had a cup of coffee at the iconic Sidamo, can you truly call yourself a D.C. native? This neighborhood coffee shop has been around for more than 15 years and is loved for a reason: its coffee is just out of this world. Travel to Ethiopia (kind of) by experiencing their traditional coffee ceremony. Sip some strong brews and learn about the whole coffee ritual – it’s more than just a caffeine fix; it’s a cultural experience.
5. Try D.C.’s local breweries
D.C. has a booming craft beer scene, so grab your friends and hop on—no pun intended—a brewery crawl. Sample unique brews at local favorites and become a D.C. beer lover. Check out our guide to the best breweries in D.C. to check off your D.C. bucket list!
6. Travel the world in a month
Ditch the plane ticket and explore the world in your own backyard! Every May, D.C. explodes with international culture during Passport D.C.. This month-long family-friendly event celebrates the city’s vibrant diplomatic community with embassy open houses, street festivals, cultural performances, exhibitions, workshops, and more. It’s your chance to experience everything from Spanish cuisine favorites to Bolivian folk dance parties, all without leaving D.C..
7. Get lost, or find yourself, in the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land
Need a break from the city buzz? The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America has a hidden oasis with amazing gardens replicating the Holy Land. Find your zen moment amongst the meticulously recreated landscapes and enjoy a free garden tour. The tours are held on Saturdays, 11 am and 12 noon, from April 6 to September 28 starting at the visitor’s entrance. It’s the perfect chance to escape the crowds and discover a peaceful sanctuary right in the heart of D.C..
8. Tantalize your taste buds with this dark dining experience
Up for a culinary adventure that heightens your senses? Imagine being led into a dimly lit restaurant, blindfolded, where a multi-course surprise meal awaits. With sight removed, your taste and smell become the stars of the show, allowing you to experience the food in a whole new way. This unique dining experience takes place at Ambar Clarendon or Paraíso. Reserve your table to Dinning in the Dark here!
9. Hunt for the Darth Vader grotesque at the Washington National Cathedral
Believe it or not, there’s a tiny Darth Vader chilling at the Washington National Cathedral. Back in the 80s, a kid’s design contest threw a surprise curveball, and Vader himself became part of the building’s stonework. He’s super sneaky, so binoculars are your best bet (and bragging rights are the reward). Head towards the grassy area by the Lincoln statue, look up at the pointy bit in the middle of the northwest tower and follow it down to the first roof with a peak. There you go, Darth Vader in the flesh (well, stone)! Just remember, the Force might be with you, but you’ll still need those binoculars.
10. Check out this Star Wars burlesque parody
And talking about the Force, this Empire has some major sith appeal. The Empire Strips Back is a laugh-out-loud burlesque show that turns your fave characters into sexy dancers. We’re talking hot Stormtroopers, a smokin’ Boba Fett, and Twi’leks with moves that’ll blow you away. It’s gonna be hilarious, it’s gonna be spicy, and tickets are selling out faster than a TIE fighter on fire. The Empire Strips Back is an experience you need to have in your D.C. bucket list!
