About Prince William Forest Park
If you find yourself needing a little rest and respite, hit the road for a mini trip to Prince William Forest Park. Located within Virginia’s Prince William County, the park boasts centuries of human history and endless recreational opportunities.
The park sits on land inhabited by Native Americans as far back as the Archaic period, and was also a strategic point during the American Civil War, located only 30 miles from the Union capital.
Some of the park’s territory was inhabited by self-sufficient communities until the early 20th century, when federal agencies began confiscating land and relocating residents. It was then repurposed for many functions, including a spy training ground during World War II. Ultimately, though, the land was turned over to the National Park Service in 1948 and renamed Prince William Forest Park.
Today, the national park offers plenty of unique opportunities for nature and history lovers alike, including 37 miles of hiking trails, 21 miles of bike accessible trails, wildlife viewing, and historic sites. It’s also a premier camping area in Northern Virginia, and has an abundance of streams and lakes suitable for fishing.
