A study published in March of 2025 found that the District had the world’s fastest-growing rodent problem, suggesting D.C. was destined to be the rattiest city in the nation just when it was expecting one of its biggest tourism years ever.
The study examined the rat population in the District for roughly a decade, concluding that the D.C. rat population had a 12.5x increase in that period — the sharpest rodent population growth in the world!
Now, after being considered one of the ‘rattiest’ cities in the United States for over half a decade straight, the District’s officials finally seem to be taking a new approach to controlling the population.
How is the D.C. government trying to control the District’s rising rat population?
Earlier this year, the Rodent Accountability and Transparency (RAT) Amendment Act was introduced to create new ways to track the city government’s efforts to address the District’s rat problem. The same act would also allow D.C.’s Department of Health to recoup costs from property owners and managers that failed to address rodent infestations.
Additionally, several D.C. Council members have sponsored a new bill that aims to ‘rat-proof’ the District’s public trash cans, which would ultimately phase out D.C.’s open-top trash cans in favor of new ‘rodent-resistant’ ones.

Now, the latest pilot program to control the District’s growing rodent population, launched as part of the mayor’s new ‘blitz’ approach, involves rodent ‘fertility control’ bait to curb slow reproduction over time.
Other aspects of Mayor Bowser’s ‘blitz’ on the city’s rat population rely heavily on community involvement, such as encouraging Washingtonians to participate in the District’s 10th Annual Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 25th.
The goal of District-wide events like this is not to put the burden of addressing the entire rat crisis on us, but rather to highlight how we can each be responsible for holding our local communities to a higher standard.
As all Washingtonians would likely agree, a great goal is to strive for a clean District that everyone treats with love and respect.
