According to the study, several factors made the Washington, D.C. area stand out compared to other common summer travel destinations around the country, making it the #4 best summer travel destination in the nation!
The ranking considered frequent direct flights from most major cities, the quality of the local food scene, the number of landmarks and free museums, and, of course, its proximity to several excellent day-trip destinations.
Whether it be the National Park with waterfalls and cliffs less than 30 minutes away or one of the best beaches in the entire country just a few hours from the capital, there’s so much you can do.
They also mentioned the number of hiking trails, natural swimming spots, and biking paths made this destination ideal for those who enjoy nature but wanted to stay within proximity of a major city.

According to the study, the goal was to “find out which places offer the most bang for your buck,” and they did just that by analyzing the 100 large metro areas using 41 unique key indicators, including things like the cost of flights or the average price for a two-person meal.
For instance, safety was one of the ranking criteria, and Washington, D.C. was considered one of the safest metro areas in the country amongst all 100 that were analyzed!
