If you’re a fan of bagels and bagel sandwiches, then good news, because one of New York’s most legendary bagel shops will be opening in D.C. next week! Fans of the sitcom ‘Seinfeld’ might remember the original H&H Bagel from the episode ‘The Strike’ where Kramer returns to work there after a 12-year strike, a funny development for the character who always seemed between work.
The original H&H bagel, which opened in the 1970s, closed its original location in 2010 until a new owner took over. Now, under this owner, H&H has been expanding across the nation, building outposts in places like L.A., Atlanta, and now, D.C.
If you haven’t been to an H&H Bagel before, here’s an example of what the menu could look like for D.C.
Now, for the menu. While the original didn’t have bagel sandwiches, the brand under the current owner does, so the D.C. location will have breakfast sandwiches like the classic bacon, egg, and cheese, Salmon Nova, and vegetarian options like avocado. Their lunch menu is pretty robust as well, with things like tuan salad, turkey, and egg salad. There are an assortment of bagels available aside from plain, such as poppy, pumpernickel, blueberry, asiago cheese or whole wheat that can be topped with plain or flavored cream cheese.
Even though H&H is an extremely popular spot, it’s not without its controversy. Some fans claim that H&H changed its bagel recipe with the new owner, going from a dough that was dense with a smooth and firm crust to something more standard. Others are still die-hard fans of H&H, enjoying the new shift to bring more sandwiches to the menu.
Whichever way you lean towards, we recommend giving H&H a try if you haven’t already for a quick and easy meal.
