It’s been almost exactly a year since President Trump was elected Chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in February of 2025, a decision that was made just days after the newly reelected president replaced the Center’s board of trustees with some of his close political allies.
While the decision was met with some strong partisan reactions, and ultimately several artists slated to perform at the Kennedy Center in the following months relocated their shows to other venues in the DMV area or canceled their shows in protest altogether.
Why is the Kennedy Center closing?
While there are varying reports about the Kennedy Center’s current state, according to the Kennedy Center’s current chairman, President Trump, the Kennedy Center is overdue for a series of extensive repairs.
Trump cited various concerns, including broken elevators, a concerning pest infestation, and overall disrepair, and has ultimately made the decision to close the Kennedy Center temporarily to make what sounds to be extensive renovations.

When is it going to close?
According to President Trump, the Kennedy Center will remain active until this summer, on July 4th, in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday.
After that date, the Kennedy Center will be shut down for two years to make time for renovations to be completed.

What is the extent of the renovations going to be?
At this moment, no meaningful description of the renovations’ end goals or any detailed plan has been shared with the public.
So while the final product of these renovations is uncertain for now, Trump ostensibly is planning to fully gut the Kennedy Center as we know it today, calling it a “Complete Rebuilding” for a “new and spectacular Entertainment Complex”.
According to ABC News, when asked by a reporter if they’d be tearing down the Kennedy Center, President Trump said this:
“I’m not ripping it down. I’ll be using the steel. So, we’re using the structure. We’re using some of the marble and some of the marble comes down, but when it’s opened, it’ll be brand new and really beautiful. “
