First opened in 1978 in Friendship Heights, Mazza Gallerie was once considered one of Washington, D.C.’s premier luxury shopping destinations, housing retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue. However, many of the businesses struggled to stay afloat amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
It once was home to three levels consisting of 18 shops and a cinema. However, on Christmas Eve TJ Maxx, its final open retail tenant, permanently close.
In 2021, the developer Tishman Speyer acquired the property and plans to redevelop it into a 7-story, 325-unit apartment building with 25,000 square feet of retail—food and beverage, clothing, and fitness.
It’s unclear when construction is expected to begin.
