The Michelin Star awards ceremony took place at the Glasshouse in Hell’s Kitchen on Monday night, granting some restaurants the coveted star in D.C. while some restaurants lost theirs. It was held alongside NYC and Chicago, two heavy hitters in the restaurant industry.
The most exciting development of the night was seeing two restaurants that have only been opened in DC for a year gain a star.:
- Mita
- Omakase at Barracks Row
Sample watermelon crudo or an assortment of arepas, at Mita, where dishes sport influence from Colombia to Peru and are completely plant based. Or try the chef’s choice at Omakase at Barracks Row, the popular commercial strip where you’ll find The Miracle Theatre and Capitol Hill Books. At the elegant restaurant, Chef Yi “Ricky” Wang has finally found his own space after running an assortment of pop ups. What both restaurants offer is experiential dining, one where each dish is a fun surprise of flavors, textures, and ingredients.
Other additional stars: Oyster Oyster, another vegan dining spot, gained an additional green star for sustainability, Pineapple and Pears went from two stars to one and Maydan lost its star.
Local talent was also recognized in D.C. with Chef Carlos Delgado of Causa, who won the Michelin Young Chef Award. Tail Up Goat owner Jill Tyler received the Outstanding Service Award. Thi Nguyen of Moon Rabbit, featured in Punch’s best new bartenders of 2024 list, got the Exceptional Cocktails award, and William Simons of Albi won the Sommelier Award.
