One of Washington, DC’s most iconic museums will soon complete its major renovation and expansion, which will create more exhibit space, incorporate new technologies to improve the guest experience, and “inspire the next generation”.
We’re talking, of course, about the National Geographic ‘Museum of Exploration’, which will be found on the site of NatGeo’s DC headquarters in downtown DC, which currently takes up an entire block on 17th Street NW.
The NatGeo headquarters’ renovations will mean that visitors will have more access to the building than ever before!

What we know about The New National Geographic Museum coming to Downtown DC
Drawing directly from National Geographic’s press release, the “Museum of Exploration” has been sustainably built, features cutting-edge technologies, and includes enough space for multiple exhibits, including immersive experiences, a state-of-the-art theatre, a restaurant, and a retail store.
With a major focus on establishing a ‘lasting legacy’, this $300 million renovation has been the largest expansion project in National Geographic’s 136-year history.
According to Emily Dunham, chief campus and experiences officer at the National Geographic Society’s remarks in the initial press release:
“We are committed to making a positive impact at every level, inspiring the Explorer in all visitors and uniting the public on a common mission to become global stewards of our extraordinary planet.”
What we know for sure is the iconic yellow rectangle, synonymous with the NatGeo brand, will stand tall, facing the street in front of the Museum’s new entrance.

When is the new NatGeo Museum going to open?
It was just announced this week that the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration will be opening its doors on June 26!
The new high-tech museum experience will be fit for all ages and feature immersive exhibits to educate and entertain every visitor, from the smallest child to the most grown adult.
