A brand-new cultural attraction is about to open its doors in downtown Washington, D.C. this summer. The new National Geographic Museum of Exploration will officially debut this June, inside the National Geographic Society’s historic headquarters near Dupont Circle.
The massive reimagined campus includes more than 100,000 square feet of public space filled with immersive exhibits, iconic photography, interactive experiences, and a state-of-the-art theater designed to inspire curiosity and exploration.
The museum has been years in the making and is expected to become one of the biggest new museum openings in Washington in 2026. Early previews describe the experience as blending traditional museum storytelling with cinematic technology, large-scale projections, and hands-on exhibits for visitors of all ages.
When Is The National Geographic Museum Opening?
The National Geographic Museum of Exploration is officially opening to the public on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The museum is located at the National Geographic Society’s headquarters at 1600 M Street NW in Washington, D.C. Tickets are already on sale online through the museum’s official website.
According to the museum, summer operating hours are expected to run daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. following the grand opening.
The opening also marks the completion of a major revitalization project across the nearly 130-year-old National Geographic campus.
Reports say the redevelopment includes new exhibition halls, a renovated courtyard, immersive digital experiences, and a large theater space dedicated to exploration storytelling.

What Exhibits Are Going To Be Inside The Museum?
The new museum is expected to combine National Geographic’s legendary photography and reporting archives with immersive technology-driven exhibits.
One of the headline attractions will be “Photo Ark: Animals of Earth,” an exhibit connected to National Geographic Explorer Joel Sartore’s long-running effort to photograph animals around the world.
The exhibit will feature large-scale wildlife imagery and interactive storytelling focused on biodiversity and conservation.
Visitors will also be able to explore the museum’s immersive theater experience, which is designed to place guests “face to face” with National Geographic Explorers and their expeditions through cinematic presentations and digital effects.
Additional spaces highlighted by National Geographic include:
- A Photography Gallery showcasing iconic NatGeo imagery
- A Magazine Gallery dedicated to the publication’s storytelling history
- The Archives, featuring rare materials from the Society’s nearly 140-year history
- “Rolex Explorers Landing,” an exhibit following real-world exploration missions from oceans to outer space
- Outdoor nighttime projection experiences in the museum courtyard
The museum will also include rotating programming, explorer talks, trivia nights, special events, and a globally inspired food hall called ‘Explorers Eatery’.

How Will The Museum Celebrate America 250?
The museum’s opening arrives just ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations this summer.
While National Geographic has not announced a standalone “America 250” exhibition by name, the museum is expected to play a role in the nationwide commemoration through storytelling centered on American exploration, conservation, science, and cultural history.
National Geographic has emphasized that the new museum is designed to celebrate exploration and discovery across generations, themes that closely align with broader America 250 programming happening across Washington, D.C. in 2026.
The opening itself is also significant because it introduces one of D.C.’s largest new cultural attractions during a year when museums, monuments, and institutions across the capital are unveiling special exhibitions and commemorative programming tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial.
Destination DC has already listed Fourth of July programming and America 250-adjacent public events at the museum beginning shortly after opening week.
