One of Washington, DC’s many museums will soon undergo a major renovation and expansion to create more exhibit space, incorporate new technologies that improve the guest experience, and “inspire the next generation”.
We’re talking, of course, about the National Geographic ‘Museum of Exploration’, which will be found on the site of NatGeo’s DC headquarters in downtown DC which currently takes up an entire block on 17th Street NW.
The NatGeo headquarters’ new renovations will mean that patrons of the museum will have more access to the building than ever before!
What we know about The New National Geographic Museum coming to Downtown DC
Drawing directly from the National Geographic’s press release, is that the “Museum of Exploration” will be sustainably built, it will feature cutting-edge technologies, and include enough space for multiple exhibits including immersive experiences, a state-of-the-art theatre, a restaurant, and a retail store.
With a major focus on establishing a ‘lasting legacy’, this will be the largest expansion project in National Geographic’s 136-year history.
According to Emily Dunham, chief campus and experiences officer at the National Geographic Society’s remarks in the press release:
“We are committed to making a positive impact at every level, inspiring the Explorer in all visitors and uniting the public on a common mission to become global stewards of our extraordinary planet.”
What we know for sure, is the iconic yellow rectangle synonymous with the NatGeo brand will stand tall, facing the street in front of the Museum’s new entrance.
When is the new NatGeo Museum going to open?
While the announcement was launched this week stating that the renovations are underway and renderings have been released based on the upcoming museum’s designs… the press release mentioned an expected opening date sometime in Mid-2026.
