Ask D.C. residents about their opinion of the city’s bagel scene, and you’ll receive a slew of different responses. While some swear by trendy, top-rated spots like Call Your Mother, others prefer more affordable locations like So’s Your Mom and Bagels Etc. — which opt for little marketing and are strictly cash-only. If you’re still on the quest for the best bagel in D.C., PopUp Bagels may be worth a try this year.

Founded in Westport, Connecticut in 2020, PopUp Bagels began as a tiny backyard pickup window before expanding to over a dozen permanent locations across the United States. Known for their fresh-out-the-oven bagels and inventive schmears, PopUp Bagels has quickly risen to fame (which is somewhat ironic alongside its tagline “not famous, but known”).
Each bagel is crafted with care, starting from carefully selected, quality ingredients all the way through a precise proofing and baking process that ensures the ultimate texture and flavor. PopUp Bagels also works alongside leading brands, chefs, and culinary innovators to develop extraordinary schmears that transform the cream cheese experience with bold and unexpected flavors.
In December 2025, PopUp Bagels announced its upcoming D.C. arrival with an Instagram post of the new facade on Wisconsin Avenue. Users flocked to the comments with animated remarks, including “this is the best news I’ve heard all year” and “I can die happy now.”

While the Georgetown location’s official opening date is still undisclosed, we do know that they’ll have an evolving lineup of schmears to accompany their hot, fluffy bagels. With combos ranging from caramelized onion cream cheese to brown sugar cinnamon butter, there’s something for every palette.
PopUp Bagels is also opening a downtown Bethesda storefront, which will be the bagel chain’s first location in Maryland. Although the exact opening date has also yet to be announced, window signage is up at 7607 Old Georgetown Road, on the ground floor of the Solaire apartment complex.
