Washington, D.C., is getting one more chance to celebrate the legacy of one of its most iconic sports venues.
RFK Legacy: A Tailgate Experience is coming to the RFK Campus next month, bringing together sports fans, former players, community leaders and Washingtonians for an afternoon honoring the history of Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
The free event will feature food, live entertainment, sports and opportunities to meet some of the people connected to the stadium’s storied past.
The celebration comes as RFK Stadium’s history remains a major part of Washington’s sports and entertainment identity.
From professional baseball and football to D.C. United, the World Cup, Olympics and major concerts, the stadium has hosted some of the city’s biggest moments since opening in 1961.
When and where is the RFK Legacy Tailgate taking place?
RFK Legacy: A Tailgate Experience is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, from 1 pm to 5 pm at The Fields at RFK Campus in Washington, D.C. Events DC announced the free community event on August 17 as a way to honor the history and memories associated with RFK Stadium.
The stadium opened in 1961 and went on to become home to the Washington Senators and Washington’s professional football team, while later hosting the first three seasons of the Washington Nationals and D.C. United.
RFK also welcomed major international sporting events, including matches during the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 Olympics.
For music fans, the stadium’s history is just as notable, with legendary performers including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and U2 taking the stage there.
What to expect at the RFK Legacy Tailgate Experience
If you’re thinking about going, expect much more than a traditional tailgate.
Events DC says the celebration will include fan experiences, autograph and photo opportunities, live performances, intramural sports and other family-friendly activities, along with food.
The event is also expected to bring together former players and coaches, Washington, D.C. sports legends, elected officials, community leaders and local residents, creating opportunities for fans to celebrate the stadium’s history with people who were part of it.
For longtime Washington sports fans, the event offers a particularly nostalgic opportunity to revisit the memories created at a stadium that was at the center of the city’s sporting and cultural life for more than six decades.

Events DC describes it as a free community event, meaning there is no admission charge to attend.
