The Potomac River is about to look like something straight out of the 1700s as historic tall ships sail into Alexandria for one of the most visually stunning events of the summer.
From June 12-14, Alexandria’s waterfront will host “Sails on the Potomac,” a three-day festival packed with ship tours, live performances, interactive history experiences, waterfront entertainment, and family-friendly activities.
The event is part of the nationwide commemoration leading up to America’s 250th anniversary — but Alexandria’s celebration may be one of the most unique in the country thanks to its deep Revolutionary-era roots and iconic waterfront setting.
And with free fireworks, jazz performances, public art, and rare access aboard towering historic vessels, this could easily become one of the DMV’s biggest bucket-list events of the summer.

What makes ‘Sails on the Potomac’ one of the most unique events coming to Alexandria this summer?
Unlike a traditional street festival, Sails on the Potomac turns the Alexandria waterfront into a living, interactive maritime experience inspired by America’s founding era.
Visitors will be able to walk along the Potomac surrounded by 100+-foot-tall historic ships:
- The Kalmar Nyckel — a 1997 reproduction of a colonial ship that was built in 1627.
- Gazela — an original vessel built in Portugal in 1883
- Providence — a 1976 reproduction of a sloop with records dating from 1769
- The Sultana — a 2001 reproduction of a Royal Navy schooner that was built in 1767.
The festival is also tied directly to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations, highlighting Alexandria’s connection to early American history!
The city is also expanding the experience beyond ship tours with history villages, educational programs, public art, evening receptions aboard ships, and themed performances throughout the weekend.
Adding to the spectacle, Alexandria will cap off Saturday night with a free fireworks show over the Potomac, giving visitors yet another reason to stay after sunset.

Here’s everything you’ll be able to experience during ‘Sails on the Potomac’
The centerpiece of the event will undoubtedly be the opportunity to board real historic ships docked directly along the Alexandria waterfront.
Some tours will allow visitors to step aboard the vessels and explore areas rarely accessible to the public.
But the festival goes far beyond ships.
Visitors can also expect:
- Live music performances throughout the weekend, including the expanded 48th annual ALX Jazz Fest
- Interactive history exhibits and reenactments inside the 250th ‘History Village’
- Family-friendly activities and educational programs across the waterfront parks
- Evening ship receptions, where guests can meet captains and enjoy waterfront views after hours
- Public art displays, food, and waterfront entertainment stretching across Old Town Alexandria
The festival will run from June 12-14, 2026, primarily along the Alexandria waterfront and Waterfront Park.
Admission to many activities is free, though reserving timed tickets is recommended for ship tours due to expected demand (there will be a walk-up line, but reserving tickets in advance will guarantee a chance to board the ships).
