The coveted San Diego to Washington D.C. flight route has finally been approved and we could see flights starting within 90 days of its approval. Before the decision, SD was the largest market without nonstop routes to D.C.
The U.S. Department of Transportation approved the bill on Tuesday, December 17th. This comes after the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 was approved, a bipartisan bill that reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for five years, through Fiscal Year 2028. That means a safer, more regulated aviation industry.
Alaska Airlines has been chosen to fly the route and made an announcement on their website, stating “Alaska Airlines is proud to announce new nonstop service between San Diego International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), becoming the only airline to offer this direct route and enhance connectivity to the nation’s capital.” San Diego’s business hub can finally connect to DC’s, helping people travel for business and pleasure.
Now, Alaska Airlines connects SD along with these 4 other routes: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland.
You can hopefully be able to start booking flights soon, with flights starting to take off 90 days after the route bill was approved.
