If you missed the Strawberry Moon that peaked early this morning, there are still many other astronomical events lighting up our skies this summer, if you know where to look.
The Strawberry Moon will be the last spring moon before our next full moon, the Buck Moon, which will be the first of summer. The Buck Moon will rise on Thursday, July 20th through 21st, in the east in the evening, highest in the sky around midnight, and west before sunrise on the 21st.
All month long, Venus will be the brightest star in the sky during the early mornings in the East. On dark nights, you should be able to see the Milky Way as it rises in the sky this month. Mars, Saturn, and Mercury will be visible at different points in the night, after dark, midnight and dusk, respectively.
Which astronomical wonder are you most excited for? If you capture any pics of the Strawberry Moon, make sure to send it to us at our Instagram: Secret.Washington.DC for a chance for it to be shared.
On July 28th and 29th, you can see the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower that happens annually from July 12th to August 23rd, but it will peak on the 28th and 29th. According to SeaSky.org, the crescent moon will set early in the evening which should make for wonderfully dark skies to catch the Meteor Shower.
August 12th and 13th will be another meteor shower, Perseid, an annual meteor shower that usually garners a lot of attention because it produces up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. The shower will be between July 17th and August 24th, peaking on August 12th and 13th.
