Washington, D.C. has officially been ranked the #1 park system in the United States by the Trust for Public Land in its newly released 2026 ParkScore rankings.
The annual study evaluates the park systems in the nation’s 100 largest cities using metrics like park access, acreage, amenities, equity, and public investment.
This marks the sixth consecutive year that the District has claimed the top spot — further cementing its reputation as one of the greenest and most park-accessible major cities in America.
From the National Mall to neighborhood recreation centers and splash pads, D.C.’s vast network of parks continues to stand out on a national scale.
Why Washington, D.C.’s park system was ranked the best in the nation
According to the 2026 ParkScore rankings, Washington, D.C. scored exceptionally high across all five ranking categories: access, equity, investment, acreage, and amenities.
One of the District’s biggest strengths is accessibility. The report found that 99% of D.C. residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, one of the highest rates in the country.
The city also dedicates an enormous amount of land to green space. More than 21% of Washington, D.C.’s land area is reserved for parks, helping the District outperform nearly every other large American city.
The Trust for Public Land also noted D.C.’s strong performance in park equity, highlighting that park access is spread relatively evenly across neighborhoods rather than concentrated only in wealthier areas.
The District’s continued dominance is not new, either.
Washington has consistently ranked among the country’s elite park systems for years, including several prior #1 finishes dating back to 2021 and strong top-tier placements even before then.

Washington, D.C. topped the rankings again in 2026, but several other cities also earned recognition for exceptional park access and recreation systems.
The top-performing cities included a mix of West Coast, Midwest, and East Coast destinations (including one other DMV area city).
