After what has been a relatively warm December in D.C. the city is currently bracing itself for its first snowfall since January of of 2022, almost exactly two full years ago to the date. According to Accuweather meteorologists, the snowstorm is expected to hit the entire northeast portion of the U.S. this weekend, making travel between cities like Boston, New York, and D.C. nearly impossible!
When is the D.C. snowstorm?
This weekend, specifically Saturday evening through Sunday midday, D.C. is predicted right on the cusp area that falls between where significant snowfall is expected to hit and where they predict it will be rain instead. Not only does this make D.C. one of the southernmost cities that meteorologists are predicting to get hit with snow as a result of this weekend’s snowstorm, but it also makes it one of the most dangerous weather conditions in the northeast, as the mixed weather is very likely to result in icy and road conditions.
Interesting, this may just be the first snowstorm to come out of what was initially predicted to be a very snowy winter for D.C.!
How much snow will D.C. get?
Currently, D.C. is being included in the list of cities in the northeast that are predicted to be hit by this weekend’s snowstorm, with an expected total of around three inches of snow hitting D.C. between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. As a result, there are also precautions that city officials of D.C. and the surrounding DMV area have started taking to ensure the roads are prepared for the storm, including road crews preparing salt trucks and snow plows to maintain local streets and highways.
What are the temperatures expected?
Currently, the temperate predictions for this Saturday, which is when the snowstorm is expected to hit, is a high of 38° and a low of 34°, while on Sunday the low is 32° and it’s expected to get as high as 46° later on in the day. What this suggests is that the snowfall, as it’s currently predicted, will take place mostly between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, before slowly melting away later on in the day on Sunday evening.
What should Washingtonians do about the snowstorm?
First, the best thing to do is to take safety precautions, there may be an increased risk of icy conditions around the D.C. area on the road this weekend, so be sure that if you are going to drive, do so carefully and only when necessary. If the weather warms and the expected snow turns into rain, or even if the snow melts quickly, then the conditions could become even more dangerous as the temperature drops overnight and roads freeze.
Now, if the snowfall is as significant as expected then you may want to go outside for some fun! Whether that be sledding, snow tubing, or just playing outside in the snow, make sure that you are dressed for the occasion and warm up after with some delicious hot chocolate!
