The Washington Monument Illumination is officially coming back for five nights, transforming the nation’s most recognizable monument into “a towering canvas of light, animation, and American history” during the Freedom 250 festivities honoring our nation’s sesquicentennial.
Running from July 1st through July 5th, the free nighttime experience will feature immersive projection mapping visible from across the National Mall, giving residents and visitors another chance to witness one of the capital’s most memorable patriotic displays.

When will the Washington Monument be illuminated?
The Washington Monument Illumination will take place every night from Wednesday, July 1st, through Sunday, July 5th.
Each evening’s projection program is scheduled to run between 9:00 pm and 12:20 am, giving visitors multiple opportunities to catch the show after sunset.
The experience is free and open to the public, with organizers recommending the National Mall as the best viewing location for the projection-mapping presentation.
The illumination is part of the broader Freedom 250 celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary, which includes events, performances, and attractions across Washington, D.C. throughout Independence Day week.
Organizers also encourage visitors attending the Great American State Fair or Salute to America festivities to watch the nighttime display while visiting the Mall.
