Book lovers have one of Washington’s biggest annual cultural events to look forward to later this month as the 2026 National Book Festival returns to downtown D.C.
Hosted by the Library of Congress, this year’s festival will feature more than 80 authors, poets, illustrators and storytellers representing nearly every literary genre imaginable.
The 2026 edition also introduces expanded programming celebrating America 250, giving visitors even more opportunities to explore the nation’s history through books, music, film, folklore and interactive experiences.

When and where is the 2026 National Book Festival taking place?
The 2026 National Book Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22nd, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown Washington, D.C.
Festival programming runs from 9 am until 8 pm, while doors open beginning at 8:30 am.
The annual event has become one of the nation’s premier celebrations of books and reading, bringing together acclaimed writers and thousands of readers from across the country.
This year’s lineup includes notable names such as Cynthia Erivo, Martin Scorsese, Ann Patchett, Kate McKinnon, Geoff Bennett, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Tayari Jones, and dozens more.

Is it free to attend?
Yes. Admission to the National Book Festival is completely free, making it one of D.C.’s best free events of the summer.
However, 2026 marks the first year that attendees must reserve free entry tickets before arriving, even though individual author sessions and programs do not require separate tickets.
Festival organizers encourage visitors to reserve tickets ahead of time because entry now requires advance registration.
