Google held its annual “Doodle for Google” competition recently and the winner of the competition, Maisie Derlega, is a D.C. student whose Google Doodle was seen across the entire nation today!
What is ‘Doodle for Google’?
The annual national competition held by Google invites young students from all around the country to submit a “Google doodle” design centered around a particular theme or prompt given by Google as part of the challenge along with a few sentences about the design’s meaning and inspiration.
The annual competition typically sees thousands of submissions, but every year only one student is selected as the winner and has their ‘doodle’ featured on the Google homepage across the entire United States!
This year, that winner was Maisie Derlega, whose interpretation of the prompt, “My wish for the next 25 years…”, was for her family’s dinner traditions to stay the same.
Maisie added to the description of her doodle – “Every Sunday night is filled with chaos, laughter, and the smell of food in my household. The standing invitation goes to any friends and family in the area. As my life grows and changes, my wish for the next 25 years is that this tradition remains a constant.”
She also expanded that as she grows – goes to college, meets new people, and develops a better understanding of herself and the world around her – she wants to be sure that the simple traditions of family, friends, and the value of openness will remain strong for years to come.
What did Maisie Derlega receive as the Doodle for Google contest winner
Aside from having her doodle on the Google homepage today, as the Doodle for Google 2024 champion, Maisie is slated to receive a $55,000 college scholarship from Google and will also get a $50,000 technology package for her school.
The national content winner certainly receives a nice prize and the competition is made up of tens of thousands of participants across the country, so it is always great to see D.C. locals thrive!
