
In case you haven’t heard the good news, the first Buc-ee’s travel center in Virginia has recently announced its expected opening date!
Whether or not you’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a Buc-ee’s before, Washingtonians should be interested to hear that this is not your average rest stop and is considered by many to be “the world’s most-loved travel center”.
Where will Virginia’s first Buc-ee’s be located?
The state’s first Buc-ee’s will be near Harrisonburg in Rockingham County, located off of Exit 240 on Interstate 81, roughly two hours from the District.
When will the new Buc-ee’s location open?
Construction of the famous Texan travel center has been underway since January 2024, and the county hopes to achieve a 50% completion rate by the end of the year.
According to reports, the initial opening date for the first Buc-ee’s in Virginia was planned for July 4th, 2025; however, recent announcements suggest that it may open a few weeks earlier, in June of this year.
The new Buc-ee’s will be their northernmost location to date and their first in Virginia. It will join 46 other locations across the southern United States in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Colorado.

Why is Buc-ee’s a big deal?
The iconic southern staple is far more than a simple gas station or rest stop, it’s truly become a cultural phenomenon and bucket list destination for many Americans… but why?
First, this is no ordinary rest stop; the new Rockland County location is set to be roughly 74,000 square feet with 120 fueling stations, over 20 EV charging stations, and enough parking to host over 600 vehicles, all in all, it’s expected to bring in over 200 permanent jobs.
Aside from its massive size, for reference, Buc-ee’s holds the record for the World’s Largest Convenience Store (in Luling, Texas) and the World’s Longest Carwash (in Katy, Texas), what truly makes Buc-ee’s the pride of the south is what you can get inside!
Inside this 24-hour travel center, you’ll find fan-favorite foods like authentic Texas BBQ brisket, Beaver nuggets, high-quality beef jerky, their famous fudge, and of course, a staggering amount of Buc-ee’s merch featuring the iconic beaver mascot.

Isn’t a second Buc-ee’s coming to Virginia soon?
Yes and No, there is another Buc-ee’s location that has been discussed and is expected to be located in New Kent County, roughly 2.5 hours south of DC and around 40 minutes east of Richmond.
However, this location is much further from completion and is not expected to be open until sometime in 2027.
