After the Federal government officially stopped minting Pennies in November, it seems like some Washingtonians were left quite distraught and in desperate need of closure over the discontinued currency.
Now, Washingtonians are coming together to give the “little copper hero” the send-off it deserves at a funeral service over the weekend at the Lincoln Memorial!
When is the funeral service taking place?
The funeral is going to take place at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, December 20th, at 1:01 pm!
There is likely to be quite a crowd, so be sure you arrive on time, or maybe even a little early, to make sure you get the best spot to view the event.

Do you have to RSVP to attend?
Not quite, but there is an official link for the ‘funeral service’ where you can add in your own RSVP to tell the organizers you plan on attending!
Currently, as of Thursday afternoon, there are around 898 guests RSVP’d as going to the event, so it seems like the ‘secret’ on this event is already out.
Dress code for attending the event
Organizers of the final goodbye ceremony honoring the Penny’s legacy have requested that attendees adorn their finest funeral attire (black clothes, black veils, and tear-filled eyes)… or an Abraham Lincoln costume.
According to the invitation, there will be an appreciation for guests who really go all-in on the Victorian clothing.
You are also supposed to “BYOP (bring your own penny) to pay your respects.”

Guest speakers for the Penny’s funeral service
The invitation does hint at a few mystery “famous” speakers providing eulogies at the event, but there are a number of speakers that are already confirmed!
- Mary Todd Lincoln
- A real Lincoln family descendant
- A coin appraiser
- A noted penny economist
Who is hosting the event?
The event was organized and will be hosted by Ramp, which is a b2b fintech company.
