There’s no doubt about how much work goes into keeping the District running these days.
Realistically, a decent percentage of that work even goes into ensuring that the entire United States of America doesn’t come crashing to a standstill.
Now, Washingtonians can officially reaffirm our bragging rights thanks to a study by WalletHub , which broke down and ranked the hardest-working cities across the country!

How Washington, D.C. got ranked the #2 hardest working city in America
The study, which measured 116 cities around the country using 11 different metrics to define ‘hard working’, found that Washington, D.C. had the second highest ‘total score’ in the nation, with a result of 77.94 out of a potential 100 points.
The only city in America with a higher score was Anchorage, Alaska, which scored 80.15 out of 100.
Washington, D.C., got its high placement because it has the highest share of workers who leave their vacation time unused (64%), the fourth most hours per week spent working in the nation, long average commutes, and a large percentage of residents who also volunteer during their time away from work.
What were the other hardest-working cities in the country?
According to the study, including Anchorage and Washington, D.C., the top 10 were as follows:
- Anchorage, Alaska – 80.15
