Dogs will be taking over The Wharf this August—but not for a leisurely stroll along the waterfront. Instead, some of the country’s most athletic pups will be flying through the air as part of a nationally sanctioned DockDogs competition.
For the first time in Washington, D.C., spectators will get the chance to watch canine competitors battle for the coveted Iron Dog title while showcasing incredible speed, distance, and jumping ability.
When is the DockDogs event coming to the District?
The DockDogs at The Wharf competition will take place on Saturday, August 8th, from 10 am until 6 pm at District Pier along The Wharf waterfront.
The all-day event is being hosted by Chesapeake DockDogs, bringing one of the organization’s nationally sanctioned competitions to the nation’s capital for the very first time.
Throughout the day, dogs and their handlers will compete across several exciting disciplines that combine distance, speed, and vertical jumping to earn cumulative scores.
The event culminates with competitors vying for the title of Iron Dog, awarded to the top-performing canine athletes.
A full competition schedule is planned, including:
- 10:30 am–12:30 pm: Speed Retrieve
- 1 pm–2 pm: Big Air 1
- 2 pm–3 pm: Big Air 2
- 3:30 pm–5:30 pm: Extreme Vertical
- 6 pm: Awards Ceremony
What to expect if you’re planning to go
If you’ve never seen a DockDogs competition before, prepare for plenty of jaw-dropping jumps.
One of the signature events is Big Air, where dogs sprint down a dock before launching themselves into a pool, with some competitors capable of soaring more than 27 feet.
Another fan favorite is Speed Retrieve, where dogs race across the water to grab a suspended bumper in under six seconds.
The grand finale is Extreme Vertical, a head-to-head challenge where dogs leap straight upward in an attempt to grab a toy hanging above the dock.
Elite competitors routinely clear six or seven feet, while the current world record stands at an astonishing 9 feet, 2 inches.
Beyond the competition itself, visitors can enjoy additional pet-themed activities, including a Tito’s pet lounge, personalized pet gear, and opportunities to meet adoptable dogs and kittens from the Brandywine SPCA.
Spectators are also welcome to stay for the awards ceremony featuring ribbons, medals, and prizes.
Is the DockDogs event free to attend?
Yes. Admission is completely free for spectators, making it an easy addition to a summer day at The Wharf.
The event is also pet-friendly, so visitors are welcome to bring their own dogs, provided they remain leashed while exploring the outdoor spaces.
Organizers note that August temperatures and large crowds can make conditions challenging for pets, so owners should plan accordingly.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase from The Wharf’s restaurants and designated event areas.
If you’re driving, The Wharf offers underground parking garages, while Metro riders can walk from Waterfront Station or take the free shuttle from L’Enfant Plaza.
