U-Haul famously releases an annual list of the fastest-growing cities and metro areas across the country at the end of each year based on data it has collected over the previous 12 months.
According to the 2025 results, one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation just so happens to be around an hour’s drive from the DMV area!
The city in question is none other than Fredericksburg, Virginia, which earned a spot on the rankings for the second year in a row.
Where does Fredericksburg rank among the fastest-growing cities in America?
According to U-Haul, Fredericksburg ranked the #13 fastest-growing city in the nation in 2025, making it one of the most common final destinations for people who rented a one-way truck, trailer, or moving container from U-Haul in the last 12 months!
Seeing as how just the year before, in 2024, Fredericksburg was ranked the #2 fastest-growing city in America, it’s remarkable to see that the city is still experiencing a consistent boom!

What has made Fredericksburg such a growing city?
Even though U-Haul’s study does not necessarily correlate directly with economic or even population growth, it does offer an interesting insight into the region’s development.
For instance, while Fredericksburg itself may not be a major employment hub, it is uniquely positioned between two of the Mid-Atlantic’s biggest job markets, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, VA.
The halfway location could make Fredericksburg an attractive place to live in today’s unstable job market, giving people with potentially unstable employment an opportunity to work in either market, provided they are willing to make the commute.
The rising costs of housing in the DMV area could also be a credible explanation, as many potential home-buyers are priced out of neighborhoods in the DMV area, and many are forced to seek real estate opportunities in up-and-coming communities, such as Fredericksburg.
