Not long ago, Giant Foods put in place a bag size limit policy and while they have since made a few changes to this policy, it remains a frustration to many DC residents who have voiced a willingness to shop at other grocery chains to avoid the inconvenience.
Unfortunately for D.C. area residents, Giant Foods, one of D.C.’s most popular grocery stores, is implementing even more strict and inconvenient restrictions in place for shoppers to curb the ‘unsustainable’ amount of shoplifting its stores have been experiencing.
Giant Food’s new Unaccompanied Minor Policy
Despite their bag size limit policy being in place since late May of this year, Giant Foods has made it clear that the unsustainable levels of theft that led to their initial policy have not done enough to curb shoplifters.
As a result, Giant Foods has implemented a “no unaccompanied minors” policy at six out of seven D.C. locations after 6 pm – the only location to not have the policy enforced is the McLean Gardens location at 3336 Wisconsin Ave. NW.
The following locations will not allow anyone under the age of 18 to enter without an adult after 6 pm:
- 1400 7th St NW – Shaw
- 300 H St NE – Atlas District
- 1345 Park Rd NW – Columbia Heights
- 1050 Brentwood Rd NE – Brentwood
- 1535 Alabama Ave SE – Shipley Terrace
- 4303 Connecticut Ave NW – Forest Hills
How is Giant Foods enforcing this policy?
While there hasn’t been any official comment from Giant Foods after implementing this new policy, the people in charge of following through on these new rules have been the security officers stationed at the front doors of each Giant Foods location.
One such security officer (at the Shaw location) recently shared with the Washington Post that he is, “not checking IDs” and instead is “using his judgment” to turn away minors that aren’t entering with adults.
