While Glenstone Museum may not be as accessible as the NGA or many of the Smithsonian Group’s museums in downtown D.C. because of its location, we strongly believe it is one of the most underrated cultural gems in the DMV area!
Located just 15 miles from D.C. in Potomac, Maryland, this private contemporary art museum is one of the largest in the nation, providing its visitors access to works from some of history’s greatest artists, impeccable architecture, and hundreds of acres of tranquil outdoor space to celebrate the natural beauty of the property.
What makes Glenstone Museum unique from other museums around D.C.?
Glenstone Museum opened in 2006 as an immersive way to experience art that was not possible at the other museums around the District, and it remains one of the DMV area’s most unique art experiences to this day, 20 years later.
What makes Glenstone so unique is that while the museum is free to enter, you are required to make a reservation for your visit at a specific time slot.
This maintains a limited number of visitors, which adds to the goal of making the museum a fantastic place for peaceful contemplation away from the crowds you frequently find at the museums along the National Mall.
The importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere is also why Glenstone only allows visitors ages 12 and up, so while it is a stunning art experience, it is unfortunately not a very family-friendly plan if you have little ones.

How to make a reservation to visit
To schedule your visit, all you have to do is go to the Glenstone website and book the best available time slot that works with your schedule.
It’s worth noting that the slots can be competitive, which means that you’ll have to plan your day around the time slots that you can get, rather than planning your visit.
