If you are a carb-aholic or just nut for high-quality bread, then you are going to want to check out Bread Alley!
Bread Alley is a tucked away and seemingly secret bakery tucked away on Morse St NE and despite only being about 100 square feet, the bakery churns out some of the best bread in the city, even supplying the bread for the best D.C. eateries like Le Diplomate in Logan Circle.
Everything you need to know about Bread Alley, D.C.’s only “bread speakeasy”
The bakery first got its start inside the kitchen of Le Diplomate, working to develop and perfect the process to make the ideal French baguette, now a team of six bakers start their day at 3:30 am every day just to ensure they can produce the hundreds of baguettes necessary to keep the clientele at Le Diplomate satisfied! That being said, a visit to Bread Alley will reveal a whole lot more than just French Baguettes! Those who visit the hidden bakery can check out the impressive selection of bread, bites, and even butter to suit their needs and experience some of the best freshly baked bread in the entire city!
Bread Alley is open seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm but with their fresh bread being produced daily, for the best possible experience you’ll want to get there early when their selection for the day is at its peak and before they sell out! The location for the bread speakeasy is technically at 1250 5th St NE and is part of the popular Union Market, however, you’ll find that to get entry to the shop you’ll need to venture around the back, down the Morse Street Aly until you come across a pair of light-colored wooden doors that are pointed at by a couple of white arrows that are painted on the brick walls. To get access, you have to ring the doorbell and wait to be let in by one of the staff, and given how small the space is, shopping here is a very close and personal experience between you and these bread experts so feel free to ask whatever questions you may have to ensure you don’t miss out on anything!
