Just last week, the Prime Minister of Japan announced that Japan officially will be gifting 250 new Cherry Blossoms to the United States to be planted in Washington, D.C. to replace the iconic Cherry Blossom trees being removed as a result of construction on the Tidal Basin seawall.
It’s been over 100 years since Washington, D.C.’s original 3,000+ Yoshino Cherry Blossoms were sent to the capital city by Japan in 1912, and just like it was a symbol of friendship and unity between the United States and Japan then, the same meaning still holds today.
Where will the new Cherry Blossoms from Japan be planted?
The 250 new Cherry blossoms that Japan gifted to the United States by their Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, are apparently going to be planted along the Tidal Basin near the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The new Cherry Blossoms coming to Washington, D.C. from Japan will likely also be Yoshino Cherry Trees, the same type originally gifted to the United States in 1912.

The 250 new Cherry Blossoms from Japan are a formal gift from the nation of Japan to the United States in honor of America reaching its quarter-millennium birthday.
