Jimmy Carter, the longest-living president at 100 years old, passed away Sunday, December 29th 2024.
The White House announced Monday, January 30th that Carter’s official state service would be held on January 9th. The service will take place at Washington National Cathedral and flags are to be at half-staff for 30 days. There will be multiple services held, from Plains to Atlanta to DC where the official service will take place then back to Plains for him to be buried in his hometown.
On Monday in DC, crowds lined up at the People’s House: A White House Experience, to sign a remembrance book in honor of Carter.
The public has been invited to sign it in person at 1700 Pennsylvania Ave NW from 9 am to 5 pm or they can sign a virtual condolence card.
Before the service on Monday, Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on January 8th.
At the National Portrait Gallery, a drape has been added to Carter’s portrait with a comment book set up nearby for guests to leave a message.
Jimmy Carter was the 29th president who served from January 20th, 1977 to January 20th, 1981.
He’s most remembered for his human rights-centered foreign policy and for establishing the Departments of Education and Energy, as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
