We may be biased, but we truly believe that Washington, D.C. has one of the most underrated sushi scenes in the nation.
From Michelin-Starred omakase counters to a restaurant certified by the Japanese government as culturally authentic, if you’re a sushi lover in the District, you don’t have to go far for a good meal.
That being said, this new sushi spot that just opened downtown blends the quality of the District’s top omakases with the affordability of some of the most accessible sushi spots around.
Where to get the best affordable omakase in D.C.
The new sushi spot in town, which is offering a $40 nigiri or hand roll omakase, is called Kiyomi by Masaaki “Uchi” Uchino.
The new restaurant will be an upgrade from Chef Masaaki “Uchi” Uchino’s original Kiyomi restaurant, a countertop location at The Square food hall that closed in 2025.
The new Kiyomi location is a larger standalone space, complete with a 16-seat omakase counter!
The restaurant officially opened this week, but according to Axios, it is only open for lunch to start on a walk-in basis, which means there could be quite a line for at least the next few days.
The best value that you can get here will be the nigiri or hand roll omakase served at lunch time for just $40, which includes a bowl of homemade miso soup.
If you want to experience a more luxurious omakase that highlights the depth of Chef Masaaki “Uchi” Uchino’s mastery, once dinner services begin, you’ll be able to order a 15-course omakase for $120 per person, or opt for the $200 premier omakase, which offers between 20 and 24 courses (only to be served Thursday to Saturday).
