The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) has secured a major federal investment that will bring long-awaited upgrades to L’Enfant Station in Southwest Washington, D.C., one of the region’s busiest rail hubs.
The project includes $25 million in federal funding to improve the station itself and add a new fourth track through a critical rail bottleneck used by both VRE and Amtrak.
Officials say the work is designed to reduce congestion, improve reliability, and prepare the corridor for future service growth.
L’Enfant Station handles roughly 45% of all VRE riders, making it the single most important stop in the commuter rail system.
What upgrades are coming to L’Enfant Station?
According to VRE, the grant will fund a combination of station improvements and rail infrastructure work at L’Enfant Station.
The centerpiece of the project is the construction of a fourth main track between the L’Enfant and Virginia interlockings, a section of corridor where limited capacity currently creates delays for both commuter and intercity trains.
VRE says the station itself will also receive upgrades intended to make it safer, more efficient, and easier for passengers to navigate.
Because nearly half of all VRE riders pass through L’Enfant, even small improvements at the station can have an outsized effect on the entire network.
The added track is expected to provide:
- Reduced congestion at one of the corridor’s busiest choke points.
- Better on-time performance for VRE trains.
- More operational flexibility for future service expansions.
- Additional capacity for both commuter and intercity rail traffic.
VRE CEO Katie Choe called the project “the last piece of the puzzle” needed to support significant service increases planned for the next decade.
Who is paying for the D.C. station upgrade?
The $25 million award comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the competitive BUILD (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) grant program.
The funding was announced with support from Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warne.
VRE and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission will partner with the federal government to complete the grant agreement and move the project into the implementation phase.
The investment is notable because it targets a station located in Washington, D.C., while supporting commuters traveling from Northern and Central Virginia.
Officials say the improvements will benefit both regional riders and the broader Northeast rail network that shares the corridor.
When will construction begin and when will it be finished?
VRE has stated that the project’s start date is slated for Q1 of 2028, with an early 2030 completion.
Once completed, the new track and station upgrades are expected to create additional capacity through one of the most heavily used sections of the region’s passenger rail network, helping accommodate future growth in both VRE and Amtrak service.
