New Year’s Eve conjures up a few collective images: streamers, champagnes, cheers, a kiss at midnight, and—of course—fireworks!
Unfortunately, Washington, D.C., doesn’t put on a proper fireworks show in celebration of the new year. (Boo! Hiss!) But fret not, Washingtonians!
Several neighboring cities and events—all just a short drive, Metro, or Uber away—will still be lighting up the sky in honor of the new year.
So if fireworks are a crucial part of your New Year’s Eve, before the countdown begins and Washingtonians gather to usher in 2026, check out where you can ring in the new year with a sparkle and a bang!
1. Old Town Alexandria

Just across the Potomac River, Old Town Alexandria will be ringing in the new year with a midnight fireworks show!
Given its proximity to D.C., this is a great option for any Washingtonians looking to stay closer to home.

- Rivergate Park (2 Montgomery Street)
- Oronoco Bay Park (100 Madison Street)
- Founders Park (351 N Union Street)
- Waterfront Park (1A Prince Street)
- Windmill Hill Park (501 S Union Street)

2. National Harbor, MD

Taking place right on the water, just a short drive away from the District, this fireworks show is absolutely one to remember!
Plus, with all the activities and things to do around National Harbor, you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained both before and after the clock strikes midnight.
3. Inner Harbor, Baltimore

The Inner Harbor in Baltimore is a popular spot for people to go and enjoy the fireworks. The Inner Harbor Ice Rink will be open until midnight on New Year’s Eve so that you can skate to the sounds of Baltimore’s best musicians.
There are even extended hours for Baltimore’s museums, such as the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center. Hours are detailed on their website. Come early because there will be pre-firework entertainment starting at 7 pm, followed by fireworks and a drone show at midnight.

4. Annapolis, Maryland

A slightly further drive, but equally as beautiful, teeming with fun-filled gatherings, and near the water, Annapolis is another hot spot for a free New Year’s Eve fireworks-filled plan!
This incredible fireworks display over the Atlantic is just about an hour from D.C., and, in our opinion, the atmosphere alone makes it worth the trip!
