Halloween season is getting a little wilder in D.C. this October as the National Zoo brings back its Night of the Living Zoo party.
The adults-only 21+ event will transform the Lower Zoo into an after-dark Halloween celebration complete with unlimited drinks, live entertainment and plenty of spooky surprises.
And if you want to snag tickets, public sales go live this Thursday, August 27, with Zoo members already getting early access.
Here’s everything to know about one of the most unique Halloween parties coming to D.C. this fall.
When and where is the National Zoo’s Night of the Living Zoo taking place?
Night of the Living Zoo will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, from 7 pm to 11 pm, with last entry at 10:30 pm.
The 21+ Halloween party will be held in the Lower Zoo, near the Great Cats exhibit, at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.
Guests will also have after-hours access to select animal exhibits from 7 pm to 9 pm, including the Reptile Discovery Center and Great Cats exhibits.
The Zoo notes that this isn’t primarily an animal-focused event, but it offers a rare chance to experience parts of the Zoo after dark in a completely different atmosphere.
What to expect at Night of the Living Zoo
Think of it as an all-inclusive Halloween party at the Zoo — with a seriously spooky twist.
Your ticket includes admission, unlimited drinks from pop-up bars and live entertainment, while food trucks will also be stationed throughout the Zoo for guests looking to grab a bite.
The planned entertainment and activities include:
- Unlimited drinks from pop-up bars
- Live music
- “Zoostrology” and tarot readings
- A dance floor with live DJ sets
- After-hours access to select animal exhibits
- Roving entertainers and creepy Halloween scenes
- Flash tattoos (available for an additional purchase)
Costumes are definitely encouraged, so this could be the perfect excuse to finally wear that elaborate Halloween costume you’ve been planning. Just keep in mind that full-face masks and real or costume weapons aren’t permitted.
How much are tickets for Night of the Living Zoo?
General admission tickets cost $75, and Zoo members can save 15% on admission.
Members also get an additional perk this year: early access to tickets beginning August 20, while tickets go on sale to the general public on August 27. Members can purchase up to six tickets at the discounted rate, plus up to six additional tickets per order at the general admission price.
Parking costs $30 when purchased in advance or $40 on the day of the event, and regular member parking benefits don’t apply during Night of the Living Zoo. Parking is sold separately, and space is limited.
The event is expected to sell out, so if this sounds like your kind of Halloween night, you may want to move quickly when public ticket sales open this week. Proceeds from the event support the Zoo’s animal care and conservation programs.
