According to a new study conducted by Bloomington, the safest place in the nation is none other than a suburb of Washington, D.C., and a significant portion of the DMV area is considered the safest region in America!
The study examined annual deaths per 100K population that resulted from either land-transport accidents or homicides between 2018 and 2023, so while the study does not paint a broad image of safety, as it does not include data like violent crimes, it does offer a general insight into what communities across the country provide a place to live where your life is statifically at low risk.
Which Northern Virginia counties ranked among the safest in the nation?
Three counties in the Northern Virginia region of the DMV area were ranked among the top 10 safest counties in the United States, according to a Bloomberg report.

Those were:
- Arlington County
- Loudoun County
- Fairfax County
Arlington County
Ranked the #1 safest county in the nation, Arlington stood apart from other counties across the country with its progressively improving conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and bikers, making it by a wide margin the safest county in the study.
Loudoun County
Ranked the #2 safest county in America, considering it is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, Loudoun County was not a shocking name to see on this list.
However, it’s still remarkable to see that two NoVa Counties managed to rank the #1 and #2 safest counties in the nation!

Fairfax County
Ranked the #8 safest county in America, Fairfax County had similar metrics to Loudoun County when it came to deaths as a result of land-transport accidents, but did have a higher rate of homicide deaths.
So while there were more risks than the other two DMV area counties in Northern Virginia mentioned above, it is still one of the safest counties in the United States.
