In case you haven’t been keeping up, the Washington Commanders’ pursuit to return to the District with a brand new stadium has been well-known since the NFL team was sold back in 2023 to its current owner, Josh Harris.
Since then, it has been an ongoing saga of navigating both legal and political hurdles to secure project approval.
However, in late 2025, the D.C. City Council finally passed its final approval for the new stadium!
What will the new Commanders Stadium look like?
The new stadium has been designed by the architecture firm HKS, the same group that designed SoFi Stadium in LA!
According to the first renderings released of the project by HKS and the Commanders, as well as some additional information to contextualize the renderings, the new stadium will feature a transparent domed roof and hold up to 70,000 people.
The design of the stadium itself seems rather conservative, featuring a basic white facade of dozens of massive columns supporting the sloped roof design with huge glass windows between each column, making the entire stadium seem to glow at night.
While some might knock the design for being basic, it does seem to reflect the character of the District’s many historical structures and monuments with a timeless look.

Is this the final stadium design?
No, the design is pending final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission.
If the commission believes that the design is lacking or requires modification in any way, their feedback will be incorporated into an updated design, which will be proposed for approval in the near future.
It’s worth noting that the goal is to have the stadium open by 2030, a deadline approaching sooner than you might think, which means that there will not be enough time for multiple rounds of design changes if they want to maintain their original timeline.
