Tiny legs, big speed.
On Saturday, October 3rd, from 2–6 PM, District Pier at The Wharf becomes the most chaotic — and arguably most joyful — racetrack in Washington, D.C., as dachshunds from across the city compete in the 14th Annual Wiener 500 Dachshund Dash.
Entry is free, and all race registration fees go directly to Rural Dog Rescue.
The dash is the centerpiece of Oktoberfest at The Wharf, a full afternoon of Bavarian-themed competition and waterfront festivities.
Between heats, spectators can meet the Rural Dog Rescue team and visit with adoptable dogs looking for homes.
If you can’t snag a spot trackside, the races stream live on the big screen over at Transit Pier on Wharf Street.

What else is happening
The Stein-Hoisting Championship kicks off at 3:15 PM on District Pier.
Qualifying rounds run at participating Wharf restaurants in the days leading up to the event, with winners advancing to the waterfront-wide final — walk-ups welcome on the day, depending on availability.
At 4:15 PM, the Best Dressed Contest takes over: dirndls, lederhosen, and creative Oktoberfest interpretations all encouraged, with prizes for standout looks.
Sam Adams Oktoberfest Beer will be pouring throughout the afternoon at participating Wharf restaurants and bars. You must be 21+ to drink.
Own a dachshund? Race registration is now open. All entry fees are donated to Rural Dog Rescue. The event is presented in partnership with MINI of Alexandria, District Vet, Samuel Adams, and Giant Food.
