One of the iconic theme parks in the DMV area, Six Flags America, is closing its doors for the last time this fall after Six Flags announced that it will shut down the park after its 2025 season.
According to Six Flags’ CEO Richard Zimmerman, the decision behind the park’s closure “was a difficult but necessary one”, citing that the choice “aligns with our broader priorities to simplify our operations, reduce portfolio risk and focus resources on high-margin, high-growth parks”.
Why is Six Flags America closing?
Unfortunately, the decision to close the park can most likely be attributed to a generally negative reputation that the park seemed to develop in its final years.
While the park itself never seemed to make any significant effort to address the rumors or problematic perception, there were several perceived issues that often drove potential customers to other theme parks in the area.
- Safety & security concerns – Often viral for the wrong reasons: fights, crimes, and unruly crowds started to become an expectation, which ultimately drove away families or casual thrill seekers.
- Ride reliability and upkeep – Known for rides breaking down often, many reviews online from park visitors seemed to suggest that at least a few key attractions were always shut down for repairs.
- Inferior option in the region – Despite being the closest theme park to the District, many Washingtonians seemed more than happy to make the extended drive to one of the other theme parks in the area, like Kings Dominion or Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

When is Six Flags America closing?
The park is set to close after its 2025 season concludes on November 2nd, 2025, following the conclusion of its Halloween festivities.
It’s worth noting that Six Flags America has canceled its annual ‘Fright Fest’ event this year, so there will be no haunted houses or scary scenes; however, the Kids Boo Fest will carry on as scheduled, taking place from October 13th until the park’s closure on November 2nd.
What is going to happen to the park after Six Flags America closes?
While Six Flags America park is roughly 130 acres, it only takes up a small piece of the 500-acre plot of land that is owned by the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation.
According to the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, the massive property will be marketed for redevelopment as the move “aligns with our broader priorities to simplify our operations, reduce portfolio risk and focus resources on high-margin, high-growth parks”.
According to CEO Richard Zimmerman, the sale process for the property may take “12 to 18 months or more to complete”.
