To ensure equal representation across the country, the study’s sample excluded metro areas and limited no more than 10 cities from each state.
The study also categorized each city into one of three categories based on size:
- Large city: More than 300,000 people.
- Midsize City: Between 100,000 and 300,000 people.
- Small City: Fewer than 100,000 people.
Across those three dimensions, each had a unique weight in terms of scoring:
- Ethnoracial Diversity – 50.00 potential points
- Linguistic Diversity – 33.33 potential points
- Birthplace Diversity – 16.67 potential points
