Spring in D.C. rolls around, the Cherry Blossoms are blooming , the Georgetown is getting ready to have its streets turned into Paris once again, and all you see on your explore page is tulips and bluebells, but one more dreadful obligation lurking around the corner: your taxes.

When is Tax Day for Washington, D.C. this year?
Tax Day in 2024 is Monday, April 15th. This deadline applies to both Federal and District of Columbia (D-40) individual income tax returns for 2024. This is not to be confused with last year’s Tax Day which happened to fall on the 18th.
What happens if you file your taxes after the deadline?
If you don’t finish your taxes by April 15th, you will want to submit a request for an extension directly to the IRS online. If your request is granted, you will get an extension to file your taxes until October 15, which should hopefully be plenty of time.
However, this extension only applies to your federal taxes, so you’ll want to also file an extension with the District of Columbia by April 15th as well; this can be done on the District of Columbia government page.
Also note that these are extensions that refer only to the filing of your taxes only, if you are meant to pay taxes then you must still pay any owed taxes by the deadline on April 15th.
If you fail to file for an extension before April 15th or if you fail to pay
How do you file your taxes in the District of Columbia?
The District of Columbia does have an approved list of authorized e-file tax software companies that they suggest you use.
There are dozens of accepted tax filing software you can use, a few of the most recognizable include TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxWise, or Taxhawk, but there are dozens more that are equally valid in the eyes of D.C.’s government.
These e-filing platforms will work for filing both your federal as well as your District of Columbia income tax!
When do you get your tax refund?
According to the IRS, most refunds are issued within 21 calendar days of filing. If you have physically mailed in your tax filing, then you can expect your refund to take up to a month.
If you’d like you can monitor the “Where’s My Refund?” page on the IRS’s site to track the current status of your tax refund(s).
