The District’s iconic Tidal Basin will be getting a major makeover this spring!
It’s been announced that the National Park Service will be giving the Tidal Basin’s iconic cherry blossom trees a new patriotic look over Memorial Day Weekend as part of the commemoration of America’s 250th birthday.
Why and how are the cherry blossoms going to be ‘painted’ red, white, and blue?
The cherry blossoms’ leaves will be sprayed with a natural, eco-friendly ‘paint’ that will temporarily turn the trees a red, white, and blue pattern.
While there were naturally concerns regarding the tree’s well-being that came with the plan, Park Services has assured that nothing harmful will be used in the process and that the coloring will wash out without any risk to the trees or the surrounding area.
While the spectacle will certainly draw some additional tourism to the District during the holiday weekend, the goal is primarily to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in service to the United States.

When are they going to be turning the Tidal Basin red, white, & blue?
Sections of the Tidal Basin will be temporarily closed off between the evening of Thursday, May 21st, and the process for ‘painting’ the trees should be completed by the afternoon of the next day, Friday, May 22nd.
The display is expected to draw large crowds to the Tidal Basin, comparable to peak bloom.
Shortly after the holiday weekend concludes, the National Park Service will be ‘washing’ out the ‘paint’ to ensure that the Tidal Basin is restored to its natural beauty.
While there has not been confirmation yet, there is speculation that cherry blossoms could receive the same treatment for this upcoming 4th of July, which is when the United States will officially celebrate 250 years of independence.
