Washington, D.C. is facing the most unhealthy air conditions it ever has as smoke from Canadian wildfires takes over the East Coast.
On Thursday, June 8, D.C.’s air quality was Code Purple, reaching over 250 on the Air Quality Index. Anything over 200 is considered “very unhealthy.”
“‘The D.C. region has not previously recorded a Code Purple day for fine particle pollution.’ Code purple means air is unhealthy for all people. Limit time outside and/or wear mask,” the Capital Weather Gang wrote on Twitter.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser released a list of precautions Washingtonians and tourists should take in response to the smoke-filled air, including:
- Refrain from exercising or partaking in other strenuous activities outside.
- Vulnerable citizens such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly are encouraged to stay inside as much as possible.
- Utilize an air filter.
- Wear an N95 when you need to be outside.
- Contact your doctor for advice or medication if you suffer from asthma, chronic lung disease, or heart disease.
The air quality is expected to worsen or continue at least through Friday, June 9 and early in the weekend.
